A Conversation for On This Day in History

Cinco de Mayo

Mistakenly called 'Mexican Independance Day' by Latinos in the US, the day commemorates the Battle of Puebla, Mexico, where
on May 5, 1862, Mexican patriots defeated the French army.

In the US, many bars hold special 'celebrations' of this day by offering cheap tacos and Mexican beer. It's a good time!

I mentioned this on the "tell us what happened" page. I'm just glad I'm not the only one who thinks it should have been included!

I really don't know why this day is celebrated. It was just one battle that was lost next year... I've never seen anything done about this in Mexico... strange how something so unimportant is known in another country. Would people know the date of the Mexican Independence or the Revolution?

i firmly believe that the cinco de mayo celebrated in the states is nothing more than a marketing holiday (much like secretaries day, but that's another story), with the sole purpose to sell off some cheap tequila.
with so many other, viable, days to celebrate, i wonder why we (as a whole) tend towards the bastardization of non-events.
