Hey it's great! Well written, informative and other praise.
If I was subbing it, the only majorish problem I would have is the opening paragraph, which seems a bit opinionistic. It might be deserved, and the rest of the article shows this. I'd let the reader make up their own mind based on the facts, or find a quote by someone else to go in place of your own. But hey, thats just my crusade against forced opinions.
The only other thing I could see was that you've left out a 'believed' or 'held' when talking about the early superstitions about dragons and rivers.

Opinionistic? Well, I've re-read and methinks the quote is the only thing that could give people the wrong idea about the place. The rest of it is true, I got sources. I never made any of this up, in case you're wondering 
I'm a bit lost as to how to re-word it without destroying it completely.
Finally, yeah, you're right, I missed out 'believed' in the dragons bit *^_^*
