Speaking as an English teacher (stop me if you've heard this before):
"Basically the book is about..."
"My essay is about..."
"The story is about..."
"I am writing about..."
and, of course, "so on", "etc.", "and stuff", "or something".
I am weaning my little darlings off such phrases on pain of death...
