Well done I like this part 1 and 2.

Thanks, i really appreciate your comments, youve no idea what this means to me.
I went to a number of schools in the uk and felt very much the outsider. This led to my finding things of my own to do; that is things that i felt i could have entirely for myself.
When i started it was 1/2 hour crouched over a puddle in a field with a pipette. When the seniors discovered this, first they thought i was trying something on, and thus very clever; later that i was completely nuts.
When the biology department found out what i was up to they brought me numerous samples to name.
Somehow, it made a very miserable life really worth something, so 30 years later to have this kind of attention makes me feel i was not only as good as them but on an entirely different level. An alternative before anyone was alternative.
Ahh, yes after pond life there is littoral flora and fauna to do.

So, we have so far:

Intro, smallest stuff in the pond, rotifers, jellyfish, crabs and insect larvae.

Many flies, moths, a spider, water mites, water beetles, and water bugs (Hemiptera)

Still to come in pond life part 2: water bugs (the other type mentioned in "the true "bugs" are divided into two groups"), molluscs, leaches, worms, some plants.

Wow, looks like parts one and two already have enough material for 3 parts, so certainly looks as if more than one entry on pondlife is going to be required.

It feels as if you are loosely organising the entries by pond scale, with things found everywhere from puddles to huge ornamental ponds in the first entry, then moving up to the sort of pond you might dig in your backgarden in a weekend and medium sized pondlife, with the 3rd entry being concerned with stuff you definitely need lots of room for ((maybe even fish??))

my two dinar/pence: That would be really brilliant. If that is what your intention is, you should definitely mention it in the introduction to each entry - speaking of which, part 2 should have some sort of intro, just to link it back to part one.

Something along the lines of:

This is the second part of the Pond life trilogy, detailing the medium sized creatures which may be found in larger, more permanent ponds.



oh, and at current very end of Part 2, the big hemipeteran, is it found in the far east, or is it called the far eastern? At first from the position of the brackets I thought it must be a name, but I can only find an eastern toebiter bug in google.



Thats all my suggestions for the moment, bit short of time, will pop back later hopefuly.

MM you might just be right about splitting the thing up more.
My original intention was to have part 1 as the smaller animals, part 2 the bigger and part 3 as a general section on ponds with mentions of what plain puddles might hold,how a productive pond might look and what a large body of water might hold in terms of a pond life investigators interest, aah of course not foregetting ditches and dykes.
Descriptions of some of the insects in terms of my own encounters and finally finishing off with a piece on how to keep the creatures in a tank or other means of observation.

To be honest part one is not strictly as we have just said - midges really should be in part 2
Crabs, crustacea - possibly part 2 again mmm as you said this entry is getting to be quite large.
Hopefully there will be the possibility of adding photos - can i provide some of my own, and what about a small movie?

The photos are a good idea but all photos are supplied by the H2G2 photographers who can be found here A15846438.
Your option is to apply for membership and if you are accepted, if the entries are choosen to get photos, you submit your pics you wil have to get yours voted and approved by the other members.

Well your original idea for the 3 parts also seems to make sense

Once the parts 1 and 2 are fully populated with all the species you wanted to mention, it will be easier to judge how the trilogy is going to hold together. Don't worry too much if Part 2 starts getting really big - It is more important to define a logical structure, and have all the lifeforms in the right place within that structure.

I can't recall any right now, but there are some really really long entries in the Guide already, and its amazing how navigable they can be once the sub editors have worked their magic with headers and stuff.

Keep up the good work - I particularly like the bell-diving spider and dragon-fly stalking

It's possible it's those long links, which you can sort by pasting them at http://tinyurl.com - they give you a new url which is about 6 characters long and you paste that in your Guide ML instead

If Syrphus is willing, Pond Lives Parts 1 and 2 have more than enough creature content at the moment to become one nice Pond Life entry. I love the idea of these entries because they highlight how intersting large puddles at the bottom of ones garden might be, and really, there is no real need for them to be a definitive encyclopedia of every single species of organism which you might find in a pond - instead, the entry should serve to make people aware of the fascinating diversity to be found in such a small ecosystem, and serve as a useful starting point for people who want to find out more.

As such, if we could find a sympathetic sub, willing to sort out the headers, subheaders, and other GuideML, all a recombined entry would really need is an extra "Other Organisms" section, mentioning the other families and species which can be found in ponds, which this entry has not mentioned in detail.

Anyone else have any thoughts? I would really like to see these entries in PR sometime, and to have them languishing here is a crying shame (says the guy with 3 and 2 halves entries on ozone in the Fleamarket <guilt&gt
