Gnomon - time to move on Posted Aug 24, 2004
I'm very dubious about any claims that nursery rhymes date back more than six centuries. Unless there are examples of the rhyme written down from that time, I wouldn't count on it. Most nursery rhymes date from about the 18th century. If I were you, Mina, I wouldn't commit myself - I'd leave it vague as to exactly when the rhyme was written.
Obviously the bridge with the shops and houses on it could have been in a bad state of repair at any point during its history, so the poem could have been written as late as the last few years of the bridge's existence.

I've added 'supposedly' to the entry about when the rhyme was composed. I've not done much research on the rhyme itself, instead concentrating on the bridge. I'll see if I can dig anything up - a trip to the local library seems to be something I'll have to do. They had some good books when I was doing the Oranges and Lemons entry.

I've done some research on the rhyme, and I'll be adding a few bits and pieces to the entry today or tomorrow.

That was quick, I've done some changes now.
Some of the research I did suggests that the bridge is a phallic symbol, but the book that I got that from seems to say that for a rather large amount of nursery rhymes, so I left that out!

it's difficult to perceive a bridge as a phallic symbol - it's not exactly shaped like an E-Type Jag! (The book wasn't by Freud by any chance?)

No, but it does have 'cock' in the title - Who really killed Cock Robin? You'd have to read the section on London Bridge to follow it his thinking. That author also says that 'I had a little nut tree' is referring to testicles...

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Here's a quiz question for you.
I'm standing on a bridge in London. Downstream, I can see Tower Bridge. Upsteam I can see London Bridge. What bridge am I on?
