Very interesting. But surely the evolutionary process would make them evolve into different forms of robot, different materials, abilities etc. But I'm not the one studying AI.

Not sure I understand your point, but I thought that's what I said? Unless you mean that they would evolve into different types of robot, but always still be called 'robot'? In which case, no. At least, I don't think so.
Evolution doesn't seem to have those boundaries, which is why I think some (not all... not many really) of those robots would become biological. Although it would be near impossible to prove, which is why it's the weak point in the theory. I'm using the fact that it's impossible to /dis/prove, as proof. Sort of.
