It has been noted that there are very few phenomena in the realm pf computer games. Only very few games like Wolfenstien 3D, Doom, Quake, Dune II, Zork , etc etc still linger in the minds of gamers.
One game that is overlooked because modt people thought it was "bloody next to impossible" to get started was the classic 1984 game Elite.
This game allowed you to indulge yourself in everything from murder, piracy, drugs running and even ligitimate trading to make yourself shed loads of cash and equip your ship with an arsnel of firepower that would allow you to kick ass in relative safety. This simple mode of open ended gameplay has mystified millions of people, and this baffles the people who walk around saying "Right on Commander" as they wonder how a game with no rules can be hard.
This game however spawned two sequals and more clones than you could shake a polition at, and has progressed into a veritible cult on the internet, with followers who would disembowel you with a spoon for saying that Elite is pants.
