Can anyone check or respond if my Grandfather James Butterworth was one of the people who started the Rochdale Cooperative.

Hi tigercom999 just came accross your post whilst looking up co-op history, their site has a full list of the 28 original members your grandfathers isnt included. However as a youngster in Rochdale I do remember a large grocery concern of that name, one of their warehouses still exists at the bottom of high level/oldham road with the jbs logo still on the gates perhaps this is your relative .

I think you will find that Rochdale Unitarian Church, of which most of the Pioneers were members, will have the necessary information:
http://www.rochdaleonline.co.uk/sites/rochdale-unitarian-church/intro. You could also try contacting Unitarian Headquarters, http://www.unitarian.org.uk.
