I only ever wear steelies. It can lead to embarrassing delays and revealing of poorly-maintained socks at airports, but I find it's worth it.

I found that at Heathrow en route to New York. Had to walk through the detector things about 3 times before they twigged. Luckily also before they thought of making me take out all my piercings. Now *that* would have been embarrassing

Salzburg airport are particularly irritating. Earlier in the year they made me put though the scanners:
My boots (fair enough)
My Belt 
My match (it's on a wide leather strap with metal hoops)
They then attempted to dismantle my cigarette lighter and got me to take off my bandana. Presumably in case I was hiding some kamacarzi dandruff.
