Hi AGB,
as promised, I am just having a look at your Entry. I just write down what comes to my mind, without bothering to be "kind and polite".
In the "Observations ..." part, second para, the Giordano Bruno bit comes in right out of nowhere. Why was the fact that GB was burnt at the stake significant for JH? Did JH know about GB? Did JH run the risk of being burnt as well?
In the "Julian Calendar" footnote you might like to mention the according Gregorian date (Thursday, December 5th). If England had changed calendars on October 4th/15th 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII had introduced "his" calendar, the Venus transit had taken place on a thursday, which would have left much more time for JH to watch it. (I guess that a Sunday kept a church's curator much more occupied than a Thursday did.)

Thank you Jeremy
Does not the second para of the introduction make it clear about the risks JH ran?
I have added a few more words, and another footnote, and extended the footnote about the calendar.

How about
Pioneers like Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) had been burned at the stake for that very "heresy", although this was in Italy.
That would make it a bit clearer for those of us who do not know anything about GB (shame on them, jbtw).
