Gnomon - time to move on

I think it would be better as a dialogue:

Cineas: blah blah
Pyrrhus: blahdy blahdy blah
Cineas: blah blah
Pyrrhus: blahdy blahdy blah

That would take a lot less space and would be easier on the eye. You could use the Dryden quotations without crediting them.

Hi BC,

I agree with everyone here - its a great article. I had heard of a pyrrhic victory many times, and vaguely knew that it came from ancient history, but beyond that, not very much.

Some spelling thingys -

sieze --> seize
garrision --> garrison
seperated --> separated
4 miles of Romes walls --> Rome's walls
foriegn --> foreign
manouvered --> manoeuvred
skillful --> skilful
streetfighting --> street fighting
roof tile thrown by an old women --> an old woman
discribed --> described
Eygpt --> Egypt

Good work!

It is pretty long, you're right.

You could just cut it, and use key snippets.

Alternatively, you could break it up into three or four parts, with text of your own in between.

What do you think?

At the moment I'm still thinking. I think I'll try G's suggestion of just reporting it as a conversation using the John Dryden quotes and see how that looks. I'll include a link to the Dryden version as well as the more modern version in the links at the end. The Dryden version is dated 1683-1686, later edited and revised by Arthur Hugh Clough 1864, so there shouldn't be any problems with copyright. I was thinking maybe I should change all quotes to the Dryden version and include a footnote to the effect that all quotes from Plutarch were taken from it. The only problem with that is that the article would end up with some quotes in fairly dated language, which will be offputing to some readers.

Can i just suggest that on the style, you should start each paragraph with a tag and finish with a ? It's a pain to have to go through and put them all in, but it would help to make it look that little bit tidier smiley - smiley

Good work!

Gnomon - time to move on

Actually to be specific, you should start each paragraph with a and end with a . Although lowercase works as well as uppercase, the h2g2 standard is uppercase for tags.

Gnomon - time to move on

There's one sentence which worries me:

"She was now mistress of the entire Italian peninsula except for Cisalpine Gaul"

Cisalpine Gaul is not part of the peninsula. What you mean is:

"She was now mistress of the entire of what is now called Italy, except for the part north of the Po river. That part was at the time called Cisalpine Gaul."

You can then remove the footnote.

Alternatively, you could just say:

"She was now mistress of the entire Italian peninsula."

and leave out any mention of Cisalpine Gaul.

I'll add the tags in where I've missed them.
I'll also change that sentence as you suggested Gnomon. I'll leave in that bit about Cisalpine Gaul as there may be others like me who are vague on where the peninsula ends.
