I think u said it all about solitons,Joanna...Do you think its possible that
some of the formations visible in Jupiter's atmosphere may be solitons?
They have certainly been going long enough!

You mean things like the Great Red Spot? I wonder.... It seems perfectly possible that they could be, and even quite likelysmiley - smiley
Thanks for visiting!

The great red spot is probably the top of a huge storm,so they say,
I was thinking more of the linear features in the banding..8^D
The Severn Bore is really something to see..it happens in my part
of the world...Did you see the 2 guys surfing it this year?

Sorry, of course the Great red spot is a storm... Goodness knows what I was thinking there... It would seem logical.. the wind speeds can be supersonic in the upper atmosphere, but I don't know what conditions you'd need to have to get one to form... if several formed in the same band it should be possible to observe because of the way they interact, with the largest one taking momentum from all of the others, unfortunately I don't know enough about either solitons or atmospheric physics to say...
I've never seen the Severn Bore personally, I'd like to, but I kind of live far far away from itsmiley - smiley
Surfing it's supposed to be dangerous though, isn't it?

Surfing the bore you are never too far from land...8^D
The main danger seems to be from hitting the trees on the bank,or
debris swept along by the bore itself....The wave is rock steady!
As you would expect from a soliton....
