I couldn't resist posting here, too...

PS: Did you adress the old question about what's so English about the layout?

Sorry - I'll try and do something this lunchtime...
Would someone please give me a kick if I haven't posted here by tomorrow morning...

I first read this entry when I'd just started my vow of silence. But now everybody's said all the things I might have said anyway.

Hello!
Are you still working on this, Whisky?
I noticed that here: "with the longer axe of the cross" you probably mean "axis".
Otherwise, a most ecclesiastically excellent Entry.

hey
nice entry, refreshes the memory
i think you could link to other guide entries, there are loads about cathedrals and mention whether these display the same shape/layout as you describe and point out ones that are completely unique

also you could point out the top of the cross points east towards jurusalem, old fashioned maps had east at the top as well(probably for the same reason).

Ok guys, you're not going to believe this, but I've actually gotten round to doing something about this entry
Ok, here goes...
I. Title changed to "The layout of European Churches and Cathedrals
II. Addition to Para. 2 - helping to define which buildings are covered.
III. Axe changed to axis
IV. Nave subheader moved
V. Apse - footnote added in last paragraph.
VI. Rood Screen - was mentioned but not with that name - footnote added.
VII. Choir sub-header - I've left it where it is for the time being - I think the paragraph above that particular subheader is better as a general instruction to turn around and walk back up the church rather than as part of the description of the choir itself.
VIII. Note about pulpit added.
IX. Internal links added
X. Link to a BBC layout of a church added.
XLII.
Now - after keeping you waiting for so long I now expect one of two things to happen... either I'm going to be trampled in the rush of scouts who are desperate to pick this... or, which is far more likely, you're all going to make me suffer for my laziness by ignoring this one for the next six months... Which one's it going to be

Sorry about the last post. That should have been Well Done, Whisky, splendid effort, pour yourself a you deserve it.
Now for the nitpicking.
often much simpler, thus, this entry is more concerned >
often much simpler. This entry is therefore more concerned
Still on the para of axos ... you've capitalised Western but not eastern. Which are you going for, capitals or not, cos this crops up several times (I can point them out once I know which is correct!).
We will start the tour in the centre of the cross, known as The Crossing.> space needed between comma and known. Should it be "shall" not "will"? Cannot remember rather complicated rule on that one though.
Para on The Crossing has lots of commas and sub-clauses. Other people do punctuation better than I do, but I'd suggest a full stop after "alarm" to be going on with.
the shorter arms of the cross, these arms are known> cross. These
set-aside> set aside. (set-aside was what they used to talk about in The Archers some 20 years ago)
The choir: first 2 sentences perfect
English Cathedral > English cathedral
Could you lose the dots and put in a colon and bulleted paras or something when explaining Cantoris and Decani?
The section, The Priest, The section - all need small the.
verses and when> verses, and when
(BTW, what happens if the Dean is feeling particularly tuneful? Do they all sit on top of each other?)
the Pulpit, generally on the north side of the church and in Cathedral's, > aargh more commas. Well, I'd go for:
the Pulpit, generally on the north side of the church, and, in cathedrals,
But I could be wrong. I'm right about "cathedrals" though.
Altar Rail and Sanctuary - should they be in bold? And what is the Sanctuary?
Logically I think footnote 5 should be attached to "cathedral" not "itself".
In footnote six, "building and sometimes" > building, which sometimes
I'm only doing this because I care ...

Thanks Mol, I think I've covered all those changes now...
Now, to all you scouts out there - shouldn't you be bullying Mol until she applies for a scout's badge?

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
