Our Mission

WE THE CAMPAIGNERS FOR THE HITCHHIKER SMILEY DO HEREBY DECLARE OUR DESIRE FOR A HITCHHIKER SMILEY... YOU KNOW THE ONE... THAT SMILING GREEN PLANET WITH NO EYES BUT WITH ARMS AND HANDS THAT APPEARED ON SO MANY INCARNATIONS OF THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. IT LOOKS KINDA LIKE THIS BUT WITHOUT EYES AND GREEN. OK... IT WASN'T ON THE ORIGINAL COVER OF THE BOOK, BUT IT WAS ON SEVERAL SUBSEQUENT EDITIONS AS WELL AS THE VIDEO GAME AND THE RADIO SCRIPTS AND THE DVD AND VIDEO. ANYWAYZ, IT LOOKS LIKE A SMILEY AND WE THEREFORE THINK IT SHOULD BE ONE!!!

What We Know So Far

1. The Smiley list is closed.
2. Even with the suspicion of a copyright, TPTB do not want to make this smiley.
3. There are plenty of people out there already infringing on this copyright.
4. Oh, yea, it is copyrighted, by the way... THIS JUST IN: Maybe... see 10.
5. It is NOT called 'The Green Guy!!!' for the last time... A porn list site uses that term, let's not give them any more ligitamacy for interloping on our Hitchhiker!
6. The image has been legally used for many varied incarnations by different publishers, video distributers and game makers.
7. nighthoover would want us to have a hitchhiker smiley... Oh yea and a thousand oh yeas

9. I don't know if this is the same 'Peter Cross' from Guildford who did illustration for some of Anthony Phillips' album covers or not, but that is the likeliest trail I could find.
10. The cover design for the North American DVD release is ©BBC Worldwide Americas so apparently the BBC DOES have the right to use this image if any right is even required.
