About a beagle named Bacon

Most dogs have a personality. If you are not a dog person, you can argue with me, but since you are not a dog person, I have no reason to listen.

Dog people will understand. My beagle, Bacon, for example, is lazy, defiant, lovable, demanding, nosy, and suspicious. These may not sound like good qualities in a personality (and I suppose except for the lovable part, a human with these traits would not be well liked), but for Bacon, it works.

Just about everyone loves him. Maybe it's because when you come in the door he gets so excited it sounds like he is tap dancing on my hardwood floor. Maybe it is because he always thinks he is deserving of a belly rub, and will flop down next to you and demand one. Maybe it's because, how in the world can someone look at a beagle and not think those big brown eyes and floppy ears are adorable?

Often when you are not lavishing attention on Bacon he will look at you over his shoulder in what can only be described as a suspicious stare, as if to say, "Why in the hell aren't you petting me? You obviously can see how cute I am." When I am sleeping he curls up next to me and puts at least some part (if not all) of him on my pillow. He snores like full-grown man, but I'm used to it.

When I take him on walks at the duck pond near my house, he is often very defiant on his leash, especially on nice days. I know this is because beagles chase smells, and if left on their own would chase a smell right into a speeding semi-ton-truck. But just about everyone we pass wants to pet him, so of course he must roll over and receive those belly rubs.

In the mornings when I leave for work he snuggles down into my blankets and looks at me as I walk out the door. I think he is smirking and thinking that I am going to work in order to feed him and he gets to sleep in my bed all day. But then he is tap dancing at the door when I get home and I don't mind working all day for his food.

Bacon is a character. My friends and family consider him to be more of a a roommate than my dog, and sometimes I think they come over to see him as much as they want to see me. But who wouldn't? I mean, come on, have you ever seen a beagle do that cute little thing where they raise their ears?

So, Bacon is my beagle and Bacon is fabulous.
