It would appear from the timetable search that there are rail replacement buses operating on Virgin and Silverlink County services into London Euston in the Coventry and Rugby area - which seems to be causing some difficulties with being able to book Virgin Value Advance fares - I suspect possibly to do with the inavailability of reserved seats due to the works - not sure though.
This affects all journeys on the Virgin West Coast network from Birmingham and the North.
Here are some rail travel alternatives:
1) From Birmingham New Street, take Virgin Cross Country to Oxford and change there for a First Great Western Link (Thames Trains) service to London Paddington. This may not be especially cheap and involves a change at Oxford.
2) From Birmingham New Street, walk through the Bullring to Birmingham Moor Street station (about 10mins or so, signed) and take Chiltern Railways direct to London Marylebone. If departing B'ham after 11am and returning leaving London after 7:30pm, the fare booked in advance from http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/ is £15 (£9.90 w/railcard). The disadvantage is a brisk walk through a crowded part of Birmingham City Centre.

It would be easier and slightly cheaper (if booking Value for the Virgin part of the trip) to change at Reading rather than at Oxford...
