it seems a pity to call this beautiful bivalve a piddock.

Isn't it. And worse, a Mud-Piddock.
Couldn't believe it when I saw they were also called Angel Wings, and saw the pictures. And then found Fallen Angel Wings, and False Angel Wings.
But you would have to be a bit of a piddock to want that sort of lifestyle - 8 years in a hole, sticking a syphon out for food?
I changed 'as new' to 'unused' in the title. There was a third verse basically asking if such a protected life was worth it - but it was a bit heavy, and it seemed unfair to ask a mollusc that, so I cut it.
