Covent Garden, London, UK

Tourists and outdoor performance artists. Given the opportunity, Londoners will avoid Covent Garden as much as possible, yet will refer to it as a useful short-cut between Aldwych and Seven Dials.

Covent Garden used to be a fruit and vegetable wholesale market which closed down. Someone then thought it would be a good idea to rip the whole place down and build something ugly there, but to their credit the local residents (this was back in the 60s or 70s, I think, when people still used to live there) fought back and got it preserved as an awful tourist trap / shopping nightmare instead.
