A Conversation for Flannel

There seems to be some sort of confusion here. Flannel is a term used to describe a soft fabric, usually wool or cotton. Not a pattern.
In America cheap workshirts are often referred to as "flannel" shirts. These shirts are usually made of brushed cotton and have a tartan or (the American term is plaid) pattern.
The word "flannel" comes from the Welsh, where the term "gwalen" means something made of wool. The smooth, soft nature of flannel is the result of a special manufacturing procedure. The fabric is in effect "felted" and if you run your hand along a roll of flannel it has a similar tactile quality to felt. Flannel was first used for summer weight trousers in the 1930's. It soon grew in popularity, becoming acceptable for all year round wear.

Dear Charlie,
You're absolutely right, the entry is incorrect - and we've taken this entry out of the Edited Guide. It was an old one and not up to our current standards!
