Well, I could not recommend to say "genau" each time a German asks you something. Geanau is not indifferent, it is an expression of agreement and could be translated with exact/exactly.
Q: So you are the bloody b*****d, that first laid by wife and then wrecked by car last night?
A: genau
-> wrong answer!
I suggest you say "Wie Bitte?" (pardon?), which is pronouced
"hä?" in the German language.
