I recommend you take a lok at the Embassy website. http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_web/visa/niv/interview.htm That says it takes at least ten days to get your visa AND passport back to you. So no picking it up on the way out. Also you schedule your interview in advance, so no queues I suppose.
The website does seem to say you will be okay if you have a "machine readable" passport. I shall need to look at mine to see if it is.
