But then the truth hurts, as they say.
A small minority of people who think in this way - some ministers, special advisers, press people, Number 10 and Treasury bright young things - hold far too much power over the lumpen majority of ordinary civil servants.
The first problem is, they say 'this is in the national interest' when they mean this is in the government's interest, or this is in my interest. And it's not necessarily cynical either - they've just forgotten how to distinguish between the two. The second problem is, they say long term and they mean until the next election...
