Thanks McKay. smiley - ok

Pimms, on initial viewing some of your tweaks seem to be simply making things more your style than mine, but I will have a good look at them when I get time to see if there are any that a sub would also change.

I don't get much time in the week to do changes, but I will try to work this in one lunchtime before the weekend.

Whatever you like Mina smiley - biggrin
Just my smiley - 2cents It is sometimes difficult in making suggestions to separate what is incorrect from what is just not one's own style - naturally one thinks what is in one's own style *is* correct. I tried to make clear what might sound better (subjective style) from what is clearly an oversight (like that plague on the wall smiley - laugh)

"at nine pm, or dusk, (whichever came earlier) the gates were shut. They reopened at sunrise, or six am, (whichever came later) next morning."

I'd cocked that bit right up, hadn't I? smiley - laugh Fixed now!

**The ground level had already risen 7 feet
>The ground level had already risen seven feet - Could you also add the significance of this? eg 'This indicates the phenomenal amount of use the area had been subject to'**

It was rebuilt again after being destroyed (the gate or the prison?)
> The gateway was rebuilt again after being destroyed

The gate *was* the prison - if this isn't clear I'll have to tweak something.

the first half of the fields ... tenter grounds. This meaning of these two phrases isn't very clear to me in the context described.

I'm not sure how to make them clearer - what's the confusing bit?

Something urgent's jsut come up, I'll finish this later.

The bit in stars I'll come back to . smiley - ok

I've made most of those changes, except the ones I've queried above. Most of them did make the entry clearer, and picked up quite a few typos. smiley - ta

The thing about the ground level rising I've queried because I've never looked into why the ground level rises, so I don't want to plonk an explanation in. If it's understandable enough as it is, I'll leave it. I wonder if 'London Rising' deserves its own entry. smiley - winkeye

The revisions look good smiley - biggrin

Re: first half of the fields - does this mean the fields nearest the gate/wall, or nearest the road?

Is a 'tenter ground' an area where people lived in tents, or a reference to more laundry activities with sheets?

The gate/prison thing was me being too literal-minded and imagining the gateway being the gate, rather than the building the gateway was in being as a whole 'the gate'.

smiley - erm There is a lone shed at the end now, but I guess that is just a temporary aide-memoire.

The rising ground effect as an area is inhabited for centuries is one I imagine many researchers are at least vaguely familiar with from archeology programmes - if things didn't get buried over time there would be nothing to excavate smiley - winkeye

I don't think I've ever read a rationale for it - it just happens, and people say well that sounds reasonable, without asking why does the ground level not drop with erosion if the area is being used so much?

"Re: first half of the fields - does this mean the fields nearest the gate/wall, or nearest the road?"

Dunno, so I changed it. smiley - biggrin

"Is a 'tenter ground' an area where people lived in tents, or a reference to more laundry activities with sheets?" I thought I'd explained this in Bishopsgate, but I've made it clearer for people who don't live in my head. smiley - winkeye

"There is a lone shed at the end now, but I guess that is just a temporary aide-memoire." That's me not deleting 'demolished' properly. smiley - blush

Now, is this ready yet? I'm writing another London entry and I want to give that my attention. smiley - biggrin

Thanks Mina, just trying to polish what was already a very interesting entry smiley - smiley

I've scanned again quickly and it all looks ripe for picking to me (you could capitalise a lowercase 'roman' in Aldersgate section and write out a 'seven' rather than '7' in that bit before about the ground rising, but you ought to leave something for the sub to do smiley - winkeye

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
