I just love the flexibility of the language and grammar.
The first British Lady doctor; so far we have come up with:
the first doctor to specialise in treating British ladies.
the first British doctor to specialise in treating ladies.
the first doctor who was British and female.
the first doctor who was British and a female member of the aristocracy.
Let me add:
The doctor who treats the first British Lady (Mrs Gordon Brown's doctor).

I can only think of Amelia Peabody from "The Crocodile on the Sandbank" and the subsequent parts of that series. She's an archaeologist, really, but the Egyptians call her "Sitt Hakim", meaning "Lady Doctor", because she knows first aid. And those books start in 1884.
The problem is, she's a fictional character created by Elizabeth Peters

That shouldn't disqualify her, after all David Cameron is a fictional character created by the Conservative Party.

Well done Feisor spot on.
Matt's post has just reminded me of the strange story of Dr James Barry who served for many years as a military doctor. +3
It wasn't until "he" died that it was discovered that he was a she. +2DGI
There was another first involved as well for extra DGI

Incidentally, Florence Nightingale invented (or at least popularised)* the pie chart. She was a whizz at statistics and needed a handy thingummy to convince the generals in the Crimea why a little extra hygiene would do more for their armies than more cannons.
It wasn't called a pie chart though it was something like ..er.. "a rose diagram" that was because it had lots of of overlapping 'petals' each petal's area was proportional to the value of the figures it represented. +2 DGI

Matt
My guess it's actually a woman who dressed as a man, so theoretically passed the exams as a 'man' but was later found to be a woman...
+3 For the breakthrough

Thanks Bob for giving Matt +3 - I felt a little guilty after he gave me such a big nudge in the right direction.
Barry, I believe, was the first surgeon to perform a caesarean where both mother and baby survived.

Was James Barry female? Or transgender? How would we know?
If "her" sex was discovered only after "she" died, I'd be inclined to think of him as a transgender male.
I could be wrong, of course.

Hi TRiG
Whilst all things are possable the balance of evidence seems to suggest otherwise.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Barry_%28surgeon%29
should help th clear things up, records show that she was in all respects femail but lived as a male, attitudes were different then.

You seem to have an odd idea of the definition of the word /transgender/. It is certainly possible for a transgender male to have unambiguously female genitalia. For a simple (maybe even simplistic) definition, you could think of trangenderism as a mismatch between the brain and the body.

Was a presentation of the conclusions reached by others and preserved records.
You are correct I have no knowledge of transgender other than from a dictionary, but that was not the point of the question.
It appears that there is a gap in my knowledge and I would be happy to find out more if you have the time to explane further please post on my ps and you can help add to my knowledge.

Ah, but the point was if James Barry was transgender, he wasn't a woman.
