I have just come up with a theory explaining the reason why Douglas Adams created the character of Agrajag. I don't know if it's true, considering Adams died just as the story was getting interesting, but I'm pretty sure I'm close:
AGRAJAG IS ARTHUR DENT
I was just thinking of the entire story the other day, and I thought to myself, what's the reason of Agrajag, other than the obvious that Arthur Dent is an unknowing homicidal psychopath? Then it hit me, the entire reason behind the Guide series is how the universe is screwed up, right? So what would be more screwed up than the reincarnations of Arthur Dent being killed by Arthur Dent? Al Gore becoming World Dictator of course. But that's besides the point. It might also fit in with the entire "42" mystery. Since reincarnation is not bound by the law of time (see Agrajag Mountain story) Arthur Dent's rebirths could have spanned the entire history of time. If that's so then how many other spirits are there really? Have we ever met a reincarnation of ourselves without realizing it? Along those lines, I bring you:
THE QUESTION:
How many souls are there that are reincarnated?
