Sorry, Krabatt, you seem to have missed the point of the entry completely.
The situation is very similar to a war in that one species gains ground by the other species's loss. It's not done by physical fighting but by the consuming of the other side's supplies.

Magpies definitely are a lot more common in Ireland now. There is a sizable quantity in the trees around my house - not the prettiest dawn chorus, but as good as any alarm clock when they start cawing. They also have a habit of stampeding about on the roof in the morning.
I've done no research into it, but I'd guess they are so common because they have developed very unparticular dietery habits. They seem to eat just about any organic substance.
