I realise that I've not included anything on the riots at Dartmoor, but there is so much info to go through that I think they need an entry of their own, so am presenting this for your enjoyment (or as an aid to ).

This kind of stuff is just so fascinating.

You say the prison housed 6,000 to 10,000 POWs, was that between 1809 and 1815? That really must have been crowded given that the current capacity is around 600!

Great entry, it adds nicely to Skanky's entry about Princetown.

Not much to criticise, just a question.

No, I think she means that prior to the prison being built the prisoners were housed on the hulks, so the prison replaced the hulks. Not that the prisoners were taken to prison on the hulks.

Yes, that's what I understood. So you mean it's the act of taking over and not the prisoner having been taken over. Oh well, I wasn't too sure in the first place.

I can look up the exact dates the prison housed that many prisoners if you like? I was trying to avoid too many dates as my entries seem full of them!

Just thought I'd mention that I am going away for a few days from tomorrow. I may be able to get online while away, but if not please comment and I'll have a look at the entry when I get back.

I don't think it was the dates that concerned me, I was actually thinking that through as I typed it. Given the current capacity of the facility, I was thinking that the number of POWs would have been over a period of time - but then realised that it was a relatively short period of time and that most of them would have had to been there during the same time. It's a staggering number, and the conditions must have been unimaginable.
