When I check the newbies list I first select "Show only those with Introductions without any Postings made to it (ie those whom the Aces should welcome)" - this gives me an idea of how many are waiting. (for example at the moment all have been welcomed up to 4 hours ago)

I then select "Show all" within that approximate time period (now I would select 10 hours)

I check all that are starred to make sure there's an ACE welcome on them - sometimes I find one who has posted to their own space, in which case I leave a Welcome with the addition of a paragraph saying that posting to your own space is unlikely to get a response unless people visit - I may then suggest either <./>AskH2g2</.> or <./>MiscChat</.> depending on the nature of the message.

It takes a bit longer but it means I catch a few that might be missed.

Because newbies sometimes leave themselves messages it's advisable to check that there is an ACE Welcome on the page - otherwise we may miss someone.
