There are some errors in this. Let's start with the VHS/Betacam part: VHS never fought against Betacam. VHS is a (very poor) domestic format, whereas Betacam is a very high quality studio format which has been immensely popular. When VHS backers tried to make a studio format (M and MII), it failed badly against Betacam. So what's all this about Sony losing the battle?
The ill-informed writer is trying to say Beta (Betamax) the domestic format, of course.
