Is this legal?

I am a student at Hull universit7y in my 2nd year, and the drink of choice in the university bars is a good old pint of snakebite and black! However when i go back home to bristol in vacations I have great difficulty in getting served for a pint of this fine beverage and am quite often told that it is illegal? I am given varying reasons for this ranging from "it's a cocktail and we need a cocktail license" to "because it looks dirty"!!! I need to know where i stand on this issue.
