By now, you've probably heard it already but, as faithful as New Zealand's favourite son was to Master Ruhl, the artistic, commercial and temporal constraints of working for the 'Wood (Hollywood, that is) did tell.
Much was missing - Elrond's feast at Rivendell, Gandalf's confrontation with Saruman & Wormtongue in Orthanc, the trip to Treebeard's home, among others and much was similarly added. I and other fans of JRRT's novels understand why (well, I think most do, anyway) which is why we helped to make the films, cast and crew the smash hits they were.
I agree the books aren't an easy read; Tolkien isn't Rowling and should be never be taken as such. But, give him the time and effort hehas amply shown deserves and you will be rewarded with one of the finest efforts of world building ever.
(Gets down from soapbox).

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
