A Conversation for The double entendre

Well that seems to be the current expression to sum up all that is innuendo sprinkled or when a person produces their ample and well rounded double entendre. The essay was a great and interesting look at an integral part of the English language and English humour, right from Shakespare through to the music halls where the great Victorian repression was broken by cheeky comics and smutty monologues, of this era Max Miller became one of the best exponents along with George Formby. To my mind Larry Grayon ("Shut that door", "What a gay day!") plus Kenneth Williams were the best at this form of humour. Frankie Howerd himself loved the odd titter and who can blame him- he always claimed it made the audience laugh and he was always one for a warm hand on his entrance!

I love Arthur Askey, he was one of those comics that seemed to always be there! What about Ted Ray though, he was also a brilliant comic, cool and urbane he could give a joke to any line, sad that he is not as well remembered by people.Ken Dodd regarded Ted as a great! We do like the same things which is always good and we obviously like comedy smiley - smiley

Ted Ray!-love that little film
"Please turn over" also starring
Leslie Phillips "ding-dong!"
I miss seeing Ted on "Joker's wild"
doesn't seem to be on Granada Plus anymore.
I love loads of comedys and old films-those old actors could
show present "stars" a thing or two!

God I used to watch Jokers Wild on G+! It was really a good show, had Les Dawson in it, and John Cleese often, Ted Ray and many more! Whatever happened to that rather odd comic on there called Ray Martine? He never could tell a joke to save his life but seemed popular as a charachter smiley - smiley

Yes many present day stars do not seem to understand the words "subtle" or "joke", and seem to build their acts talking about contraceptives for an hour, just imagine, every chemist at Boots could be a comic according to that! (I know many comics who should be chemists too)

and Jon Pertwee turned up on Jokers Wild as well! smiley - biggrin

I can't believe when you hear someone go on about "smut" in carry-on films-then when they tell you what they watch, it's something
a) plain old dirty
and
b) totally un funny!

Thanks to the popularity of "Viz" magazine in the UK the phrase "Fnar fnar" has largely taken over from "Ooh err, Missus..." here.

(I have to declare an interest here, as I've had a couple of graphics published there... smiley - biggrin)
