Most of all I would like to know that my children are all happy, debt free (some hope) and enjoying themselves with their own someone special.
I would like to think that no one was on their own, that at least someone would 'pop' in and see them.
A blazing log fire, an easy cook meal for me and the other half, the dog to cuddle, a tin of Quality Street and some reasonable programmes on the TV, would make my day complete. Some new books, CD's, and some surprises in my stocking will take me through to Boxing Day.If you could also conjure up some snow just for the one day then that would have to be my Nirvana.

How exactly does Boxing Day work?

Not quite sure what you mean 'how does it work' but I'll explain what it is in our house.
Its the day after Christmas Day when in our house you start to eat up any turkey and other food (usually mountains of it!!!)you have left, the family come visiting, you try and put the kids toys back together that they broke the day before and generally have a good time. But there again I try and have a good time every day!
I think its called Boxing Day because it was the day when you got your 'boxes' - presents. For some reason it was all brought forward and we open presents on Christmas Day, as early as possible! Obviously my family has no self control at all!

I always thought Boxing Day was to do with gratuities/gifts for tradesman/servants & distributing money to the poor from the church charity box.
I like Boxing Day as being usually somewhat more restful than Christmas Day.

Yes you are right, that was one of the traditions that began in the 1800's. I believe it was then extended to everyone getting presents which was also linked to the Biblical Kings bringing gifts to Jesus. I think there are lots of diiferent things that through the ages have been done at or around Christmas and what we now have is a bit of a hotch potch of all the traditions including bits of the Bacchanalia feast which was pre Christainity and took place at the end of the year. Still it makes for a good break during the winter months!

In MASH (very reliable information sources I have, huh?) they said that Boxing Day was when the servants of the house switched places with the non-servants of the house, and that in the military the officers switch with the enlisted personnel.

Like making the royal jester act as King for a day. *racking brains for the name of the festival*
