Magick in the Southern Hemisphere

This is something I think I'll do a user entry about eventually, but I thought this might be a good place to get ideas before 'putting finger to keyboard'.
This is something I've been thinking about for a while, and then I read Fiona Horne's latest book "Witches Year" (I think - not so good with titles) and she basically said the same thing.
Often something is done clockwise to build and anticlockwise to 'tear down'. For instance, a circle is normally cast clockwise, and opened anti-clockwise. Why it is this way is linked to the sun. Clockwise comes originally from the direction a shadow moves around a sundial, and presumably even before sundials, the direction that the sun 'curved' through the skie was noted.
However, in the Southern Hemisphere, clockwise is actually the opposite. That is, clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere is anti-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, and vice-versa.
As well, South is normally the compass direction for Fire (at least in all books I've seen so far), being the towards the equator, the hottest part of the planet. But in the Southern Hemisphere, North is for fire.
Lastly (for this post at least), all yearly celebrations (Samhein, Baltain and the like) are reversed, since our seasons are exactly the opposite to the Northern Hemisphere.
So, thoughts on this? Additions? As I say, I'll do a full page on this when I've got time and obviously I'll add a section for contributors too.

Ok, I've just created the page at http://www.h2g2.com/A222580 if you'd rather move discussion to there?
There's nothing on the page that's useful yet, but a cleaned up version of my above post will go there in the fullness of time.

Now here is a puzzle that never would have occurred to me. And I must confess I do not know how to best answer. I hope others have some comments, either here or on the page you have created.

Let me know if you would like a link on the Wiccan Forum page to your new page.

I'd love a link to there, thank you.
I've just put up the bones of the ideas on that page, but I'm really not happy with any of it right now, but if it generates discussion, that's all I need. smiley - smiley

The link to your page has been added to the Wiccan Forum front page smiley - smiley

If you would like to change or add to the descriptive note I made, just let me know here.

One question: the spelling of 'desoleil'???? I use the french:
'de soleil' which literally means 'of the sun'. Is it actually deosil???? dunno. am checking. Not in my dictionary [of course] --either way.

Oops! Starhawk uses deosil...so I will correct my spelling. smiley - smiley

I've never come across other spellings of deosil, but then again I've not looked either smiley - smiley
And the note for my page looks good, thank you. Now I just hope I can get my page to live up to it. smiley - winkeye

Hey there, old wolf!
I just found a page that deals with the wiccan calendar in BOTH hemispheres.

Check out the Mystical Grove's Wiccan Calendar
http://www.AMysticalGrove.com/Celebrate.shtml

There is no new information there, but they DO deal with the issue of the seasons being opposite 'down under'.

Thought you would find it interesting.

Merry Meet bluDragon!

Thank you for the fish, I acutally have a Fenny Fish now (Im so happy),

come back to my sight in a few days to see it!

Im so glad you read my article and liked it .. I figured with an article on it it would turn up in more searches.

And do tell everyone about it . . . the more people who go, the better it gets, it has gone from people being able to donate 1 cup of food per day to like 21/2.

I look forward to that tea,

hey there, wolfie!

Didja notice that there is a question in your Magick in the Southern Hemishphere page?????

I think you should have a go at answering it as you have probably thought more about these things than I.

}:=8

PS If you haven't noticed, there is no mechanism to let you know when someone starts a new conversation on one of your pages. You just hafta check them regularly. I'm sure the PTWVH [powers that work very hard]
are working to correct this technical situation, but meanwhile it's possible to miss postings.

*chuckle*
Yep, I noticed. But not long before you posted here. I'll be very glad when the PTX...PTWY...PT..smart people actually do get around to fixing that.

And I'm not sure I put a good answer. You want to have a go anyway? The more the merrier. smiley - smiley
