A Conversation for h2g2 FAQ: GuideML

This is great, but I think there's still a bit missing, especially for us html ignorant types. How do you make a bulleted list? How do you make that cool text box? What feature is it that makes some articles change to blue text halfway through (although that's always been an ugly feature, in my opinion.)? What does that "box" thing look like? How do you get chunky peanut butter spread evenly?

G'day
GuideML TABLEs -
there isn't a GuideML command that will whip up a table for you unfortunately. You can do pseudo 2 column tables like I did here http://www.h2g2.com/A187373 using the tag
with the syntax
Left TitleLeft TextRight TitleRight Text
& you can, as I did on that page, embed GuideML/HTML commands in the text areas - though you should be aware that things that can't be dynamically resized (eg pictures or text boxes) can mean that the page may require side scrolling on some screens.
Quite a number of the GuideML tags actually generate TABLE html code (see http://www.h2g2.com/P184835 for examples ) that you might be able to borrow & modify - but it would probably be easier to code the HTML from scratch.
IMAGE MAPS -
I haven't tried it. You can combine HTML with GuideML to create effects - the only time I've had a problem with this is if the HTML trys to change the page once its arrived in your browser (eg playing a midi file on a mouseover) or if it requires the use of the BODY tag (this will turn off Referenced stuff in the margin). So you should be able to put image maps into a page using HTML. I have seen a page or two at H2G2 that used image maps & they worked fine but didnt have any GuideML mixed in ( http://www.h2g2.com/A74800http://www.h2g2.com/A81587).
Hope it helps. Let me know how any experiments go .

Hi
I'm currently working on some basic HTML help pages¹. In the meantime :-
HTML LISTs -
For an unordered/bulleted list you can use
List item text.
Another list item.
Yet more things in the list.
For an ordered/numbered list use
List item text.
Another list item.
Yet more things in the list.
It is VERY important that you make sure these tags are all closed - the last time someone tried a list without closing a tag the Parser got seriously upset! & refused to give the user their page back.
Cool TEXT box -
I used the HTML This is the text box tags. Its a bit complex to fully explain here. I'll think about adding it to the HTML help pages.
Ugly blue text -
This is probably due to a known bug in the tag - there's some detail in a forum here -> http://www.h2g2.com/forumframe.cgi?thread=24108&forum=24276
What BOX looks like -
Click on the 'Box Example' link you'll find here -> http://www.h2g2.com/A187373#BOX
Chunky Peanut butter to spread evenly -
I personally find the tag gets it spread pretty evenly across my browser.

¹ Well, actually I've just started thinking about it

Thanks...
My page is in HTML right now, and I'm thinking about converting it to GuideML. Hence the question about mixing image maps with GuideML.

Thanks for all the help. But now it's been a few days, so it's time to bug you again. How can I make just a couple of words of text stand out in a paragraph, like italicised, or underlined, or bolded, or braided with little candy stripes?

Bruce Posted Oct 27, 1999
Italicised This text will be italicised & this won't.
Underlined This text will be Underlined & this won't.
Bold This text will be bold & this won't.
braided with little candy stripes- use a paint program & incorporate it as a picture

That sounds real complicated.....I probably could have come up with that answer myself, if I'd bothered to try. Thanks, dude!

Can we put stuff in the section of the html? I have a cool javascript joke database partly worked out, but it needs stuff in the section. So can I do it?

h2g2 GuideML & HTML pages have a section generated automatically so I guess you can't access that area
But I'll ask.

In that case I'll probably have to put a js file on my web page and reference it.

That should work - the only other way to get around the preformatted h2g2 pages is to use a new browser window & wtrie the html into it from javascript - but its a bit ugly.
