a far cry from Scotland - from its impermeable granites and impoverished
landscapes to the tremendous variety
of biomes born of altitude, rampant vulcanism, errant tectonic plates and a tropical climate

From the ancient and worn quiet to the fiery upstarts.
Glad I caught this one, I wasn't in time to read a couple you posted last week.
A Merry Christmas to you too - hope you catch a kingfisher. I don't think you'll need any luck to spot a woodpigeon.

Magpies and Jackdaws - Glasgow endemics -
the city is their sanctuary - to me a Magpie
in a cage would be all the rage - but not
Robin - had a Rook once that would fly to my
hand & a Kestrel too & a great gowf Red
Setter who loved me - stupid mutt - running
nose to ground all morning - an oriflamme
banner streaking through the park - love me
love my dog, my magpie, & my Rook - fab trip
- cheers - langsandy

My seeing birds started in Glasgow. My father tried to take us to hear the dawn chorus in Dawsom (?spelling) Park. He wasn't very good at getting 9 and 6 year old girls out of bed in time though so we always missed it - but then went bird nesting. There was a dunnock's in an old stone wall. Damp woods, moss and sky-blue eggs. It was the only time he ever did something with us, showed us, that was his.
He had, still has, a fascinating book of South African birds. One with illustrations on glossy plates - pagefuls of beautifully coloured birds. I loved looking those.
Greetings of choice for the season to you, langsandy,
Waz

& a fine time we had of it, Venus a lamp before
us over the high pass where the pools were frozen,
a buzzard screaming across Gharbh Choire Dhe the
news of our coming, the ponies stoic as ourselves
against the wind, a breakable crust impeding our
feet and no rest until we made camp under the
pines in Glen Derry - the word from Luibeg that
Mari had given birth tae a wee lairdie assuring
us that our journey had not been in vain . .
