When you speak of Faraday, you should pause for a moment and remember his series of public lectures (for the Royal Institution, I believe, though I don't have the correct reference to hand to look it up) on the science that can be demonstrated with the aid of a simple candle. They're a classic of the inquiring mind, and to this day they influence impressionable youth to the pursuit of science.
What's filling that niche these days? Probably thoughts of Bill Gates' billions are influencing impressionable youth to the pursuit of computer science. Not the same thing at all.
