I am here to sooth your worries - Jesus does endorse the use of towels. In fact he used one him himself - look at John 13; he washes his disciples' feet like a servant, then dries them with his towel.
This chapter is in fact, all about Jesus telling his disciples to follow his example, by what he is doing. So my conclusion from the passage is that we are to use towels.
Phew. That's a weight off my mind.
