The other day I heard an orchestral version of "Blowin' in the Wind", complete with flute solo and sleigh bells.
The use of pop music or folk musik as just plain scores for variations to be played upon with skillful arrangers ignoring for the most part the origins of the tune or the meaning of the words is actually both frightening and enlightening.
When a Beattles tune sounds very much like a Cole Porter tune and a Beached Boiz tune sounds very similar to a valtz, then you know that Harry James and Elvis had a lot more in commun than either was ever willing to admit.
