Too Many Smileys?

I'm getting smileys cropping up in my postings - without any intention on my part!!!
I had a Winkeye appear in the middle of another Smiley (with > just before it) - which was weird!
And someone else had a 8) appear when trying to illustrate a calculation!!
What I meant from the heading was are there too many short-cuts to smileys??

The first problem has (I hope) just been fixed by Jim, but the second is because the sequence 8 followed by a ) is interpreted as a *-) smiley.
Worth avoiding. If it drives people mad, we can always restrict it to just using 8 - ) for 
...

The 8 ) only becomes a Problem if you are illustrating a 42ism with an 8 in it (well, as far as I'm concerned)
