A Conversation for h2g2 Smileys

Thieves! Scandal!

The editors might like to go to
[URL removed by moderator]
(if that's removed, it's the Wisecat website. It's a dot com company) and take a look at the smileys in the navigation bar at the top. The fish isn't ours (although it looks suspiciously like the altavista babel fish) but the cat and grin smileys *are* h2g2 ones.

Thieves! (I don't normally mind pirating pictures on the internet but Wisecat is a commercial site, so it's a bit cheap of them - and they don't even list h2g2 in their online community section!!)

smiley - bat? Don't you mean "club" as in "it's still got a nail in it at night"?

I could be talking about a mammal that's eaten a fingernail, or a baseball bat... you decide!

I've just been checking out that '[Removed by moderator]' site - very strange. I don't think it's a commercial site in the "dot com company" sense - for instnance, its 'websearch' is the Instant Directory, which can be added to any site for free. And aren't the little Babel fish from Altavista? *checks* it is! It's the one next to "translate" on the front page!

Ahahaha... they don't want to be messing with the BBC AND Altavista!

I get the impression that Altavista got caught out using Babelfish without DNA's permission at some time in the past. Do they still have the link to h2g2 just underneath it?

The smiley - bats are all on our side.
smiley - vampire <-- Picture of BBC lawyer.

*laughs at BBC vampire lawyer*

Further investigation has shown that wisecat's newsfeeds are from Moreover, its mailing list is just powered by listbot, and its "top 100" doesn't appear to work. All very dubious and ameteurish - quite a good idea, though - using all the free stuff from the web to make a pseudo-professional site. But NO-ONE steals h2g2 smilies and doesn't even link to the site! If you look at the names of the gifs, they're still the same.

*calms down and wanders off to have breakfast*

The smileys are still there. The reason I ask is that someone else is asking if it's ok to use the smileys on home pages. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F20473?thread=132378&latest=1
