I Forgot my email address

Strange I know, but I forgot which email address (one ancient, one newer) I'd used. No problem I thought, login with one of them and the right password. That appeared to work, it was my second try with the ancient address that was correct though.
Now a two part problem, The email address I'm currently registered with is not just ancient but it's now dead. (The machine it was on went on a skip!) so I thought I'd change it to the newer address. OOPS! it appears that when I tried this address with the right password it registered me as a new user (even though I used the 'Existing user' login form)
So the question is, how do I get rid of the phantom user I partly created so I can move my researcher account over to the new address? I've not accepted the phantom researcher setup, but there's no 'oops, I didn't mean to do that' option.
