I don't know whether this word's in the OED as my copy is many miles away, but according to an article on telephone dials I have just read (yes it's a full and interesting life) it's the name for #. I've always referred to # as hatch (as in shading) but I'm told by a colleague that it should be hash - she doesn't know why.
