Created | Updated May 20, 2007
Bruxism is an unconscious habit of excessive tooth grinding, often at night. The chief factor behind tooth grinding is stress, although too much caffeine, alcohol or antidepressants can also be to blame.
It is estimated that one in four adults suffer from bruxism, although they are unaware of it due to being asleep.
In the majority of cases there are no ill effects, but the condition can cause an aching jaw, headaches and may erode healthy tooth enamel.
Some Famous Sufferers
In 2006, Dr Philp Kurland, a Harley Street cosmetic dental surgeon of some 40 years standing suggested that British Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Tony Blair MP was showing signs of bruxism.
In 1999, an Italian doctor, Dr Filippo Surano, claimed that the secret of the Mona Lisa's enigmatic smile, was that she suffered from bruxism.
