h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

*knocks 3 times, then opens the heavy door*
Anyone here?
*lights a 2 candles and walks over to a bowl of water build into the wall*
*fumbles with pack and brings out a little white sphere with a black dot on one side*
*drops it in the pool*
*scribbles some notes in a log and then washes the sphere off*

notes:[ found strange white orb in some caves in the forest. the caves have few features, but this was down in a watery bit next to main route through. the cave seems a bit magical, so i brought it in here.
it's about the size of a fist, maybe a bit bigger, and has a little black spot on one side. like a grenade, but not heavy enough. it's covered in mud so i've washed and i'm about to mess around with the black spot. if nothing happens i'll break it open.]
*scans that and sends it by the fleet admirals office and lab 18 with a note*

*goes rummagging in a supply cabinet for some pliers, a saw, and some magic-goggles...*

*puts the orb on a stand and looks at it through a microscope*

*sees very fine patterns engraved all over it*

hm...

what is it?

i don't know yet...

see these patterns... they all seem to be completely random, yet fit together..then in other places they come into parallel smooth curves and then later split up again... and there seems to be a bigger picture, i can't see it here... i'm gonna get the computer to map them all...
*goes to the lab*

You need to do a density test, find out what it is made of

i'm mapping the surface grooves first, then i'll get some info...
