Dear Graham, h5ringer
Thank you so much for guiding me to this link.
You write so sensitively and beautifully. I lived all of those precious moments you spent with our friend.!! Do you manage to go to Vienna often?
I really did not know know much about his life. I studied music - my mother was a violinist and had studied at the Paris conservatoire. I studied the piano and the cello, but my undoing was the fact that I was dreadful at sight-reading, and also I am a perfectionist and I prefer to listen to someone else playing beautifully than playing ineffectually myself!!.
I did however, manage to get to the concert given in honour of Rostropovich 80 th birthday at the Barbican when he played a cello concerto which had been composed for him by a Russian composer who had to go into exile. She was also at the concert. It was an extraordinary work, but I really enjoyed it. And what a joy to hear the great man playing.
However, my days of going into London and to concerts are few and far between now!!
I shall enjoy reading everything you write.!! As a student. Debussy was my favourite, and the directions written on his piano music are pure poetry!.
So nice to have met you.
Sincerely
Christiane. AR1
