All the forts around the coast are linked by a series of tunnels even out to Spithead bank.
And talking of Spithead Bank the Portsmouth News about 30 years ago ran a news story saying that the fort (which is at the mouth of the harbour) was going to be moved and 2 tugs were going to sail round and round it to unscrew it. The paper had to print an apology on April 2nd (note the date) to the thousands of people who travelled to Gosport and Southsea to witness it.

Southampton, Hampshire:
The Mayflower left from Southampton - (yes that Mayflower) and it only 'called in' to Plymouth on it's way to the US of A with the pilgrim fathers... There's a monument - and a park, and a theatre - in Southampton to commemorate that bit of history. (Why do people always remember Plymouth instead of Southampton for that!?)
Southampton (Eastleigh) Airport was the airfield from which the Supermarine Spitfire made its first flight.
Southampton, or rather the Solent, is one of those rare places in the world with a double-tide (two high tides per day). Southampton is still a busy port for that reason; although it is also very much a centre of yachting; since the Solent is such an ideal area for messing about in boats. Southampton is of course the home of a very large international boat-show each year.

I'm delighted to announce that we already have two County entries in Peer Review, waiting to receive any bouquets or brickbats that people might lob in their general direction! If you're currently either working on or contributing to a County entry of your own right now, you might like to have a quick look to see how some other researchers have tackled this challenge. They are: County Fermanagh (A6092606) and Norfolk (A6108473).
Hope you enjoy reading them!

Is anyone working on pulling this Hampshire entry together? (OK so I'm 6 months late )
I grew up in Portsmouth, lived and worked in Hampshire for many years (I'm not too far away now), and I know the county fairly well, so I'd be happy to help pull it together if nobody else has started...

God's Port - such a pretty place! I was there in December, visiting the Submarine Museum (that should get into the entry).
Some of my earliest memories are sitting at the harbour entrance watching the little green ferries going back and forth.

I'll start writing something in that case. I've got a few entries on the go, so it won't appear for a while yet. If you think of anything in the meantime - please let me know!
