Tentacle is much, much older than that! Seriously, the Japanese have had a handle on this for a while (although I'm not trying to say that all Japanese are into it, just that they're a bit more open about about fetishes that we are). 1814 is apparently the first depiction. Since the 1980s, Japanese animations have started coming over to us English speakers and we bought their porn too, avec tentacles.

I don't know if it's got *more* popular in the last couple of years - can't say it's my thing - but it's not new to these shores!

lol look what I started lol, it was an honest find lol I was just googling the lastest Cthulu fiction releases and there it was in all it's glory. Mesmerized I had to investigate and found things that even shocked me. I cant go back on google without blushing and as many times as I delted my history- I still feel dirty lol
