Unquestionably, the xylophone's only claim to fame is that outlined in the host article. However for those more interested, the xylophone is a tuned percussion instrument found in western music. It is distinguishable from other tuned percussion instruments in a keyboard format by having wooden bars and being played with wooden sticks, which lends to a characteristic staccato, wooden timbre. Most xylophones span 3 octaves and are about 4 to 5 feet long. Similar instruments can be found in the cultures of Thailand, Burma and North African and Himalayan regions.
Famous xylophonists include Patrick Moore and Evelyn Glennie.
