Myabe somone could explain why people get gold teeth in the first place so that I can tell my son. He keeps asking, and I have no idea!

I think it was quite common for people from 'the old countries' to have gold teeth. This was before modern dentistry, and I believe gold is one of the metals that people do not have allergies to. For example, my sister can only wear gold earrings in her pierced ears. I can wear any old piece of metal in my ear piercings. Whatever.
So, the fact that an old woman selling the Gig Issue has gold teeth does not say that she should be considered wealthy because of her teeth, or that the fact she is having to do this for a living whilst having gold teeth is a contradiction.
Depending on her age and where she is from, she is quite lucky to still have her gold teeth since, as everyone knows, the Nazis ripped out all the gold teeth of all their prisoners.
Anyhow, who knows? This woman may have been quite wealthy in her day, in another place, at another time. But the very fact that she is standing on a street corner selling the Big Issue, gold teeth or not, shows that she needs to do this.

Thanks for the explanation! I can't remember if she told me where she was from, but she isn't English. I know that she isn't wealthy. Anyone wealthy wouldn't be standing in the pouring rain with the BI's in a carrier bag getting soaked to the skin.

Ideno,
Why don't you ask her next time? Where she is from and how she came to be selling the Big Issue on the street corner. And then you can tell us and we will have a better understanding about people like her get to where they are?

Because I can't understand her accent most of the time. And I find it really difficult to keep saying 'What?' all the time when were' standing in the rain. Plus she's very difficult to get change out of, so I prefer to buy and . And that probably makes me a bad person.

Ideno,
A bad person for buying the Big Issue from someone who needs to sell it??? I don't think so.
